Poetry Monthly

The first Poetry Monthly has been a real success. The flights of your imagination jazzed up old fairytales and took us to stories new. Here are some examples of your wonderful creativity:

Luigi Pagano made Red Riding Hood funky and urban. It’s a gritty parable of modern times.

Silver Spun Sand re-told Little Boy Blue in concise and emotive verse:

Canonette’s Hansel and Gretel gave powerful disclosures of neglect and abuse.

Thank you for getting involved and producing such varied, high quality work with thoughtful criticism.

Our prolific poet, Philip Sydney, has offered up this month’s fabulous challenge. We’re looking at structure and this is where she wants you to start:

                                                                 ‘a view from a window’

Is it a conventional glass window, a door to somewhere or a gate shutting your reader out? What will we view...a scene outside or in, a memory from long ago, a journey to another place or something surreal? Will your window reveal all or will it be part-concealed to hide facts or alter viewpoint? Framing devices allow you to choose who comes inside your work and who doesn’t, you can play with perspective, perhaps create a Russian Doll effect.

You could look up poetry by Charles Tomlinson - he uses car windows to startling effect and Sylvia Plath uses mirrors as a framing device. Remember to put ‘Poetry Monthly’ in your title and state if you want constructive criticism in your comments section. Post your poems by 31st July. Enjoy.
