Great news. Today is release day I think, so I'm sure there'll be many more glowing reviews to follow.
Well pleased for you, Joe.
chant | February 7, 2008 - 12:03
well here's an advance article from 3rd Feb - lists publication date as 7th Feb, so Enzo's spot on:
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/magazine/story/0,,2249253,00.html

Foster (not verified) | February 7, 2008 - 12:15
Really exciting, Joe - congratulations!
ggggareth | February 7, 2008 - 12:55
Ordered it on Amazon this morning. Synopsis sounds fab. Can't wait...
drew_gummerson | February 7, 2008 - 15:19
Have already ordered my copy! I'm sure it's going to do fab.
spack | February 7, 2008 - 21:24
Weeeeeeeee!
Reviews are coming in!
There's that one in the Metro, the Big Issue up North had a really good one and there's a good one in the Independent... here:

Had the most exciting day today going round the bookshops, tracking down copies of my book. Borders, Foyles, Blackwells. I have taken photos of myself pretending to laugh at my own jokes. It was brilliant.
Then I went on Welsh radio and my Ma and Pa listened in on the wireless.
I have been so excited, all day.
I repeat: Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
mcmanaman | February 8, 2008 - 01:53
Spack, your book wasn't in Borders in Norwich this morning. It was in Waterstones though. I let it touch my face. It was comfy.

Liana07 | February 8, 2008 - 06:21
cor - film rights too. How fantastic Joe. Go you!
johnshade | February 8, 2008 - 09:34
Congratulations Spack!
I hadn't realised you were Welsh. Somehow that puts your writing in a new light...
Who's going to make the film?
spack | February 8, 2008 - 10:13
Thanks guys.
It's been optioned by Warp Films, who just made This Is England, which was very brilliant. And the first draft of the script has just turned up. I am going to read it today.
ABCTales is in my book's acknowledgements. For good reason.
Joe
ggggareth | February 8, 2008 - 10:26
Do we have to read it in a welsh accent?
spack | February 8, 2008 - 11:11
Absolutely. A broad valleys accent.
In fact, you have to read it in Welsh.
ggggareth | February 8, 2008 - 11:13
"Sybmarine"
spack | February 8, 2008 - 11:40

Play.com delivered Submarine to my work just now.
It's great. Smart layout and use of fonts, I notice. It smells lovely too.
drew_gummerson | February 8, 2008 - 12:03
Great stuff Joe.
And I think your website is fab too - http://www.joedunthorne.com
Still waiting for my copy..... I ordered it with other stuff and it's not been despatched yet.
ggggareth | February 8, 2008 - 12:05
Mine turned up this morning. And I didn't even select "express delivery" by mistake!
spack | February 8, 2008 - 12:41

Congrats, Joe. All the best to you.
maddan | February 9, 2008 - 21:59
Bought a copy in Waterstones in Norwich and am now worried it is the same one that has touched macmanaman's face.
tcook | February 15, 2008 - 11:27
It really is terrific - and thankyou for the ABCtales mention. It is greatly appreciated. I shall get it on the front page as soon as I can.
We will have a couple of copies to give away as prizes in the next writing comp - coming very soon. But don't hang on - get out and purchase a copy now!
Lorraine_Mace | February 15, 2008 - 13:27
Well done, great reviews. I hope it sells and sells.

My nose is blocked so I'll have to take John's word that it smells nice. Actually, I won't. I'll hold judgement on its aroma until my nose clears and then make my mind up. The book actually fell off a shelf and hit me on the head yesterday. So I'm feeling a degree of ambivalence towards it on a behavioural front. I feel you may have written a rather naughty book, Joe.
tcook | February 15, 2008 - 15:03
I felt so good when I went to Borders and bought my copy this morning. It looks great, it feels great and it smells great.
spack | February 15, 2008 - 17:30
Thanks peeps!
A friend of mine saw someone reading it on the tube yesterday. This excites me hugely.
chelseyflood | February 15, 2008 - 17:58
Congratulations Joe!
I have ordered a review copy and can't wait to read and smell it...
flash | February 18, 2008 - 01:19
Well done , you're a fantabulous writer and no mistake.
ggggareth | February 29, 2008 - 15:24
Finally finished "The Welsh Girl" by Peter Ho Davies and started on "Submarine".
Read the first chapter and realised I'd read it before - on here, I believe. The bit where he's sick on his neighbour's car. Stuck in my mind, for some reason!
Everyone who's seen my copy has picked it up and said "That's an interesting cover"; and then they read the blurb and say "Oo, that sounds good!"
Ewan | February 29, 2008 - 16:16
My copy of Submarine arrived in rural Spain earlier in the week. It took me a day to read it. That's a good thing, it means I enjoyed it, it means I'm going to read it again.
I have been e-mailing friends demanding they buy it
and will, I confess, bask in the reflected glory of having a connection (however remote :-D) with such a good writer.
A pleasure to have read you, Joe.
barely black francis | February 29, 2008 - 17:28
I am reading it. It's ok I suppose...
Ok, it's bloody brilliant you talented sod!!
chant | March 1, 2008 - 23:36
another good review in today's Guardian:
http://books.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,,2261183,00.html
i got my copy in Borders, Oxford Street. it's quite well displayed in Waterstones, Camden Town too.
spack | March 2, 2008 - 19:36
Hello! Thanks for reading, Ewan, and so quickly! Glad you liked it.
And Barely Black and 4G and Chant and Chelsey, thank you lots for getting hold of copies - hope you enjoy it.
There was a small good review in the FT yesterday too which, according to my entrepreneur uncle, means I've made it.

Hi Joe, just to let you know that I've been in every book shop in Norwich with a marker pen and have scribbled out your name on copies of Submarine and replaced it with 'Tim Cook', who believes himself to be some sort of writer. I had to do this. I am evil.
best wishes,
T.

One more from this weekend, a bit of a humdinger in the Indie on Sunday:

(Hi Evil Tim!)

Arriving late to the news, but wanted to add my congratulations. I will be going into the shop to get a copy...much better to see it on a shelf than order online...
I'm fed up of online...which is why I haven't been in here for so long...
After reading this thread I am imagining the whole of UK commuterville dotted with sweet-smelling Joe Dunthorne books imprinted with cheek marks...people are sniffing them erotically like the man in 'Perfume'...
