Drupal (ABC) vs. Joomla (UKA)

It seems that Google keyword searches for 'joomla', the machinery that runs UKA, outnumber the searches for 'drupal', the machinery that runs ABC, by four to one. The reason usually given is that joomla is more user-friendly.

For my part, I find that ABC is firmly focussed on the writing, whereas with other sites you sometimes wonder where it is! ABC is a bit stark and industrial in presentation but, for me, bangs and flashes and pretty flim-flam are just a distraction.

Any views on the presentation of the two sites?
Does ABC need to be tarted up a bit?
Does anybody, particularly those new to the site, find ABC hard or confusing to use?

I like the industrial ABC look. Too much fiddling and you get this http://theoatmeal.com/comics/design_hell

Couldn't agree more - keep it simple, stupid. Plain and industrial for me.

Please don't put any bangs and flashes in - it's nice like this

chuck | December 11, 2009 - 20:40

I agree with all the above. Keep it simple.

simple is right! keep the focus on the writing and writers. i do like the little changes recently on the side bar.

Drupal vs Joomla? Is it set in Japan? Is this something by the Toho Company Ltd?

Er...correction. UKA is not Joomla, it's NukePhp. And the 'plain and simple' doesn't have a lot to do with what engine you use, it's the tweaks and templates you use within it. I could make UKA look exactly like ABC (colour 'n' all) if I wanted to - I just choose not to, that's all (be a bit naughty if I did, too):-)

At the moment I'm using Brittania, but there are hundreds of different Nuke themes I could use, and then you can tweak within the themes of course (e.g. blocks to right/left/no blocks/more blocks/less blocks all with different content etc.) UKA has more blocks than ABC(on both sides of fp) activated with different content, that's all - a few clicks and I could make it as you have it here - horses for courses, and all that.

I use Joomla, which I quite like actually (but same applies as above re tweaks/themes), as it's simpler to use than Nuke and has a built-in WYSIWYG (although being used to Nuke I tend to do most html by hand) for my personal page, here: http://andrealowne.ukauthors.com/

UKA Press is Nuke too, and much more simply laid-out, as you can see >>> www.ukapress.com.

As an additional note, I hope UKA is not one of the 'other sites' you refer to! Every single thing on the UKA fp is writing-related. Well, apart from the (pretty unobtrusive) Google ads which I might remove anyway, as they're pretty useless as revenue :-)

I must say, I like ABC's simplicity as well, and since the two sites are so different in presentation, we actually both benefit, which is reflected by the fact that we have so many members in common.

Vive la difference, I say!

Perhaps FTSE just wants to see a stripped down andrea?

luigi_pagano | December 13, 2009 - 09:52

Chuck, if you buy her book 'In a Word' (only £ 4.99) and look at page 94 your dream might be fulfilled.

Andrea has a book? That's interesting. Perhaps we can organize a swap. No naughty pictures in mine though.

Ewan | December 13, 2009 - 17:30

Notice he said 'no naughty pictures'!

chuck | December 13, 2009 - 18:01

Lots of naughty typos though.

Ewan | December 13, 2009 - 18:36

Well, it must be a good book then, because I didn't notice those.

chuck | December 13, 2009 - 18:58

Thanks Ewan. Maybe not many typos but I wince at some of the other mistakes.

It is a real hard comparison, since both have great features, stable & enabling flexibility.
I have been using Drupal for the past 4 years, not because it's better but just I don't have time to try another.

I like it simple and industrial, so does my wife, hence the marriage and seven kids :/

Kahdai | February 10, 2010 - 23:32

Not hard or confusing at-all & websites are usually confusing for me, just computers even! I think flashes & flim falm would definately make it more confusing & writing here & other websites has helped my english so much!
