1970s Singers

This is driving me mad. I can half-remember a song from the 1970s, solo male singer, as I recall a bit croony-mumbly like JJ Cale. Probably American. Can't remember any of the words to the song, just the tune, which doesn't help when googling.

Not much to go on, but any ideas? Or just list any '70s male solo singers you can remember. Not ones you necessarily liked that much, maybe ones you listened to when too stoned to change the record...

what KIND of male seventies singer - the neil diamond kind? Or the david bowie kind? or neil young?

did he have hits? You can google top 20 hits for each year - that might help you perhaps

More of an LP kinda guy than a chart singles singer, ipfn. More Neil Young than Bowie. More of a girl's singer than a boy's, perhaps. Romantic-ish, although not cloyingly pop-romantic.

Thanks for trying folks, but - none of the above. It was one of my girlfriend's records, I quite liked the song when it came around although it wasn't one I'd have bought myself. Now, for some reason, the song is haunting me. Out, damned spot! Out, I say!

Sorry, no. How odd to think of Frank Zappa having parents. I thought he just materialised from nowhere.

I was just looking for an excuse to post those photos really - they are so brilliant.

try this: it would be the ultimate test of the app

Not Cat Stevens obviously. Now whatever made me say obviously?
Lou Reed?
Lou Rawls?
I think you might need to give us some more clues. I'm assuming from what you said that he's white. Is that right?

Good game though.
Bruce Forsythe?

How about Stephen Bishop?

FTSE100 | February 1, 2010 - 23:38

Hah! Got him! He was British after all. The name just came to me from nowhere, after days of trying to remember it. Still don't know the song, but I dare say YouTube can sort that one out. John Martyn!

Ewan | February 2, 2010 - 08:26

Pound to a penny it was from Solid Air.

Here's a bit of pop and show biz trivia. Murray Head, of 'Say It Ain't So' fame, is brother of Anthony Head, of Buffy shame. Well, I didn't know it before, anyway.

I wonder if Kevin Ayers is related to Pam Ayres? Ho ho.

John Martyn - a lovely man but a bit on the wild side. Gave a whole literal meaning to being legless (and used to tell the joke himself).

FTSE100 | February 2, 2010 - 20:54

Is there anybody in the world you don't know, Tony?

I know Skunk. Lovely man but very smelly.

Skunk | February 2, 2010 - 20:58

I know Footsie. Ghastly man, has to put on aftershave to disguise the fact that he has no charming aroma of his own.

tcook | February 3, 2010 - 09:29

It is true that I have met a lot of famous people but then again I have worked in the media for many years and that is something that tends to happen.

Meeting John Martyn was not through work. He was a North London boy and hung around with a bunch of people I knew back in the day. Most of them drifted off and I have no idea what happened to them but Eric arrived at Exeter University at the same time as me. He's now a Professor at UCL. In any case John Martyn and him used to fart around together so when JM played a gig at the Uni he naturally stayed with us. I met him a couple of times after that - just enough for a drink and a quick chat - but we were passing ships in the night and that was all. My impressions were that he was a lovely man on a mission to self destruct - which is pretty much what happened.

Wild Man Fischer?

alice sunderland | February 3, 2010 - 12:44

oops- just realised youve got the answer.

Soulman | February 5, 2010 - 13:44

I once got up and sang one Sunday afternoon at the Three Fishes, I think thats it's name, in Kingston, Surrey in about 1977/8 with the drummer from Supertramp, Tom Maguinness(can't spell it), the long haired guitarist from Thin Lizzy(ah.Scott Gorham,I think) and a few others that I can't remember. I'm suprised I can remember that much! Those were the day's, I think!

Kahdai | February 9, 2010 - 21:13

What song was it, do you know yet? Kp
