I think this is really, really good.
I hope it's the beginning of a story featuring this character.
It reminds me a bit of Ali Smith's treatment of teenage characters and a bit of the songs of Black Box Recorder.
Both are really very good things.
It is already much better than 'The Importance of Music to Girls' by Lavinia Greenlaw, which I really liked.
Good stuff!
Cheers,
Mark

I agree, this is lovely.
'...He smoked cigarettes with alarming ease and had eyes the colour of black syrup...'
Marvellous stuff.

Sunday's Child has proven in the past that she fits one out of the four criteria. :-)

To markbrown, thank you for your interest and very encouraging words regarding this piece. It means a lot. andrea also thanks for the feedback here.
Ewan I am muddled by what you mean- forgive me it is late and I am a little drunk on red wine.

It's a compliment regarding your writing in general:
Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.
That is, your previous writing has shown that you are good at it. Perhaps I should have just written that.
