You may have noticed that the Google Ads have disappeared from the site.
This is because there has been, what Google term, 'invalid activity' on the site. What does that mean? I don't know - has someone clicked on loads of ads to try and help us, have the ads been displayed on a page with a swear word? I don't know. They won't tell me.
I have appealed against the decision - but that's hard to do when you don't know why they made the decision in the first place! That appeal has been turned down and all they will say is:
'Because we have a need to protect our proprietary detection system, we're unable to provide our publishers with any information about their account activity, including any web pages, users, or third-party services that may have been involved.
As you may know, Google treats invalid click activity very seriously, analyzing all clicks and impressions to determine whether they fit a pattern of use that may artificially drive up an advertiser's costs or a publisher's earnings. If we determine that an AdSense account may pose a risk to our AdWords advertisers, we may disable that account to protect our advertisers' interests.
Lastly, please note that as outlined in our Terms and Conditions, Google will use its sole discretion when determining instances of invalid click activity.'
This seriously threatens the future of ABCtales. I urge any of you to write to Google (but I haven't a clue where!) and to support us with donations as best you can.
This is the future - get used to it. Big Brother is here.

Well, I think Big Brother - if he is indeed here - might deliver some slightly more disturbing outcomes than a company deciding that it no longer wishes to give you cash for putting its material on your website.

Hmmm.. nasty to think they have the power to sink a site.
I'd boycott the buggers but they are just so good at what they do.
Maybe I'll go back to Webcrawler.. or does Google own them too now?
White Dwarf | November 19, 2010 - 23:25
bah.. i just checked.. Webcrawler uses google, yahoo, bing ask and more to form its results.

I can't understand why Google would cut the entire site. Invalid clicks usually come from a few people who might use an auto clicking process or click Google ads multiple times on their pages for who knows what reason? When that happens...I don't know why Google doesn't contact the site so they can warn or remove the account of the individuals....not the site.
ABCtales is definitely the most respectable site I've worked on. It just doesn't make sense that Google would do this.
We do need to find out who to contact in the massive Google machine. I will search.
White Dwarf | November 20, 2010 - 05:19
New IP : Write an abusive letter to Google ending with I know where you sleep at night.
"The [writers] you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances, we guard you while you sleep. You do not fuck with us."
Larkin Williamson | November 20, 2010 - 13:38
I've been searching for some way to contact Google. It seems as if they are too big to be concerned about publisher relations. However...there are other sites that are happy to place ads on sites and pay for the use. One is: http://chitika.com/
With Google's attitude towards publishers...it's just a matter of time before they are eaten up by agents that actually have publisher relations departments.

I'm sorry to hear that Tony. As you say it's very difficult to complain about something if there is nobody to complain to...?
Highhat | November 21, 2010 - 16:12
I was clicking on a lot of adds- to support abc. I hope that didn't make THAT much difference. Oh dear I am sorry if it is my fault. :(
Pia
yes where do we complain?
tcook | November 22, 2010 - 10:53
Pia - who knows? Dina' fash as they say in Scotland.
Thankyou Larkin for digging out chitika - I will look into it.
Cheers,
Tony
tcook | November 22, 2010 - 11:12
And a massive thankyou to all of you who have sent in donations. It is hugely appreciated - and allows us to continue. Thankyou so much.
Tony
celticman | November 22, 2010 - 11:13
I'm in Scotland. And I don't say that :@
tcook | November 22, 2010 - 16:35
My gran did and she was from Scotland! Maybe it's died out.
Highhat | November 22, 2010 - 18:38
I don't even know what it means ?
alex_tomlin | November 22, 2010 - 21:14
Maybe we could spread the word on facebook and try and find someone who works for google to get some inside information. They don't like being contacted directly...
Peaceful | November 22, 2010 - 23:18
It's really not that difficult

The only time I ever came across 'dinna fash yersel' was when it was spoken by a supposedly Scottish steam engine in a Rev W Awdry book. And of course a Hampshire vicar would know best ...
White Dwarf | November 23, 2010 - 02:50
"dinna fash yersel" also prominently features in the Terry Pratchett novels Wee Free Men and hat full of sky etc... any book with those kool little wee Scotsmen.
Speaking of "witch".. any Australians here going to the Terry Pratchett Convention in Western Sydney next year?
Highhat | November 23, 2010 - 07:11
Okay now what does it mean please- Dina fash ?
Pia ;)
White Dwarf | November 23, 2010 - 08:16
don't fash yourself.
Do not get all in a fuss. At least that's what the Pratchett books convey.
"Dinna" is just the accent: Don't you or some such.
Fash is likely just "Mess" or similar.
White Dwarf | November 23, 2010 - 08:20
double post
White Dwarf | November 23, 2010 - 08:21
Fash = worry; trouble; bother
French fascher to annoy, ultimately from Latin fastīdium disgust, aversion
Highhat | November 23, 2010 - 08:47
Wow thanks White Dwarf- pretty comprehensive explanation.
I've tried to click on the Google contact link from
Peaceful and submitted a query but it all seems a bit hazy as to if you have some actual influence. Nevet theless I will await a reply. I have pleaded for our innocence on ABC and asked that the ads be reinstated. Then a small donation is what I can contribute with so far. Don't know what else to do right now? Am really scared of ABC having to close down. Is that an overhanging threat?
cheers
Pia ;)
White Dwarf | November 23, 2010 - 10:19
yeah no problem... though ironically (I think) I used Google to get that information.
tcook | November 23, 2010 - 16:27
Thabnkyou for that - and Pia, dina' fash yersel - ABCtales won't close down if I can possibly help it. It's cost me a small fortune over the years but I'm not moaning - I love it and I love the opportunities it gives others. I'll keep it going if I possibly can and the recent set of donations have helped considerably.
Highhat | November 23, 2010 - 19:24
I wona fash mersel Tony- I love ABCtales too so you just keep the wheels spinning and I will be very pleased along with a lot of others of course- Thanks a lot-fantastic you put so much effort (and money) into the site. You are to be highly commended and a thousand thanks
;)Pia

I am quite new to the site but in the short time I have been here ABC has been in itself such a muse for me. Inspiring me to write so much more than my usual. Do not want to think of this site going down. What a horrific notion.
