Thoughts on The Magic Toyshop

Whilst abroad this last week I was re reading The Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter (probably my favorite book) and wanted to ask if anyone would share their thoughts on the story, characters, symbolisms- whatever. I am fascinated by it and would love to hear other views on it.

I doubt I'm sufficiently aware to understand the symbolism (would probably have to re-read it) but I felt as if I had fallen into the world she has created; her writing is so vivid & immersive. She has an incredibly distinctive style. I've not seen the adaptation but would like to as I think she worked on the script. What are your thoughts on it?

I think of it as a sort of fairy tale I suppose, but I find it hard to put into words exactly what this book comes across to me as.
It's so odd and compelling and there are so many scenes that stand out to me- the mother's wedding dress in particular- and the rehearsal of the play they have to perform for the Uncle.
I should probably read some more essays about it on the internet and maybe gain some more insight there.

Thanks for your feedback anyway; I agree completely that Carter's writing is vivid and immersive- I should try other books by her.

I can recommend the Bloody Chamber then if you haven't already read it.

Thank you very much for that- I just googled it and sounds very appealing- and could prove to be very inspiring :)
