Depression
Everybody's got some.
Do you take yours bipolar or straight?
Do you find your depression depressing?
Would Eeyore have benefitted from Citalopram or ECT?
Is it a no-laughing matter? (Oooh! Subtle!)
Would anybody like some of mine? (Free)

Regarding the last question, how much is it, and do you think it go with beige curtains?
alex_tomlin | October 21, 2011 - 12:31
The Beige Curtains of Despair
Follow-up to my best-selling work The Turquoise Trousers of Tranquility.
I've probably said enough about this on the equally cheery suicide thread. Is it wrong that I kinda enjoy talking about this stuff?

Who was Eeyore? It's all a bit too much of a strain. The cold is seeping through cracks and hiding in all the nooks and crannies (I hate it and it hates me)and freezing my withered mind.
I hate winter, I hate wet leaves- I'll most likely slip on them just like on winter's ice and snow and break a leg and who knows I may even fall through a crack in the frozen lake and the water is very very cold and I'll quite surely drown. The wind blows through my clothes and is icey and cold. I think I'll stay in all winter just so as not to risk anything- it's all too much of a strain.
No I don't want to buy your depression Ftse- I've got enough of my own. A winter one- well not as bad as last winters. That was genuine and I have been thinking up all sorts of ways to avoid one this winter. Like going for lots of walks and soaking in the bit of light there is- I mean it gets dark at 3.30pm and the sun (what sun?) rises at 9am. When I get old(er) I am moving to Spain and will leave all those suckers behind. But then I will probably miss everyone at home and get depressed about that.
Well there are different degrees of depression and the severe ones are pretty dangerous. Anti-depressants can have a lot of side-effects which you can't live with so what do you do? You can't even laugh about being depressed- all you do is cry and feel really really low. Everything is grey with no substance, you can't cope with the most menial every day tasks. It's so sad and I feel very sorry for anyone with that condition.
Personally I am looking forward to Spring with great anticipation.

(Pia: Eeyore is the depressed donkey in Winnie The Pooh. ;))
Florian | October 21, 2011 - 14:43
Nice drawing - how do you do that?
Is it winter in England already? What happened to global warming - don't tell me the climate has given up on that already, just as I was finding it so deliciously depressing.
Incredible that someone doesn't know who Eeyore is; even if you missed the A A Milne stories when you were still in miniature, Walt Disney's Merchandising Division has been hitting the world over the head with stuffed toy versions for ages.
Highhat | October 21, 2011 - 15:56
Florian - I am danish- didn't know the donkey's name in english. It is heavy - the winter in Denmark but yes we do still have Autumn.
;)Pia
Thanks Ftse! what a lovely drawing. Used to read Winnie the Pooh in danish for my kids- sorry for being so ignorant. We just call it Donkey- ha ha

If I ever feel depressed I feel I shouldnt because my life is not as bad as it was and then I feel bad about feeling depressed.
flash | October 21, 2011 - 22:38
Citalopram turned me into a zombie, with the odd wacko hallucination thrown in just prior to waking up everyday.
And as for Sertraline, well that amplified my hypertension and panic attacks by about 20 x's.
So i think Eeyore is wise to avoid medication and perhaps think about about trying a lil exercise instead.

Highhat | October 22, 2011 - 14:12
I don't agree with you Richard- I don't think depression comes from self-pity. I was suffering from a depression all last winter and into the summer. No matter how I tried to pull myself together and think rationally-I couldn't and it didn't come from feeling sorry for myself. It started suddenly and ended suddenly. No I don't think you're right.
I think I got it from feeling stressed and by having new responsibilities I didn't quite know how to cope with in the beginning, therefore the stress.

I'm about to find out whether mine comes in bipolar (pretty sure it does). Citalopram would not work for Eeyore, if he's anything like me, fuelled by guilt! ;)
Kahdai | October 22, 2011 - 18:00
Eeyore is not fuelled by guilt and nor self pity!
Tigger knocks his house down and he says oh well!
and still tries to be a pretend tigger for him :)
Some people just have terrible lives and still
try to stay alive being depressed is perfectly
understandable if you are homeless or always
remmbering something bad that happened. K

Bipolar Disorder gets alot of good media attention. They highlight all the famous people who were Bipolar and portray sufferers in a generally positive light.
Not so people with other psychiatric illnesses. Apart from 'Beautiful Minds', for example, Schizophrenics are still routinely portrayed
within the media as either jokes, freaks or
monsters and I'm sure that most people still hold the misconception that Schizophrenia means a 'Split Personality' or 'Jekyll & Hyde'.

Florian, re your question as to whether it's winter in England. It's actually the warmest October on record, but still depressing as it's dark before I get home from work and still dark when I get up for work the next morning. There's rumoured to be daylight outside my office during the day, but we're never let out so I can't confirm whether the rumours are true or not.
Kahdai | October 22, 2011 - 19:27
Strange to hear of a disorder getting good media attention! Heard on the radio there is now a charity claims to be able to help family and sufferers of PTSD only for soldiers though! I don't find the dark depressing or people who work at night would be too, though I heard of a disorder SAD seasonal affected disorder or something who always get ill and depressed in winter and christmas being advertised everywhere early can remind people of a bad christmas memory.
Highhat | October 22, 2011 - 19:46
I agree with you Kahdai- I have also heard of SAD and I am sure bad memories can trigger a depression.

Bipolar has long been viewed as glamorous; associated with creative genius. Schizophrenia
has long been viewed as frightening; associated with
axe murderers and 'Norman Bates' like Serial Killers.
It's hip to be Bipolar but if your Schizophrenic, you're viewed as a leper (no offense intended to those with Leprosy)

I agree it is not something for drugs to fix, if you have a real reason for being depressed no amount can stop it happening or stressing you living with it. K
cormacru999 | October 23, 2011 - 19:49
I see a few responses that are anti drugs. So I gotta put my two cents in. I have been diagnosed as a bipolar, mood disorder nos, with a antisocial personality disorder. I have been prescribed Celexa, Geodon & Wellbutrin. all of these together keep me from dying. I would have taken my life without them. I ran out of Geodon once and immediately I wanted to die. Life has been incredibly painful for me and I'm truly miserable without the medication. I've had no side effects of any kind, but I did go through a series of medications to find the ones that work for me. Some had side effects I couldn't live with, like weight gain, or feeling tired. others I was allergic to. but now I feel well enough to go through my day, be productive and even interact with other people. again, without the medication, I'd be dead.
