I don't really go with all this dividing stuff up into decades... the naughty nineties, and all that (although I suppose the '60s were pretty swinging!)
But I make a bit of an exception with the '80s. Coming just after punk, it really did produce a huge variety of popular music - some good, some not so. Electronic, New Romance, Goth, Acid House. Also, it was a time when a lot of good indie bands started to break through.
I can pick and mix from all of it. I love The Jam, The Clash, The Human League, Gary Numan, The Sisters of Mercy, The Cure. But my favourite has got to be these guys... and this is, for me, one of their best.

They helped me through a lot of stuff at the time.

Stan | January 14, 2012 - 19:34
Anyone else got any favourites from that time?
fatboy74 | January 14, 2012 - 20:47
I came to them a couple of years after Stan, but it's still the first thing I put on the stereo after twenty years. There Is A Light is wonderful - my favourite though is Stop Me - and i love the video with all the lookalike fans on the racers around Salford - even though I'm not sure it was the original vid for that track. I also think this is the nuts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6QnK0yql8s

At the risk of being shown the door I'll put up this because:
1) John Peel liked them, and John Peel was cooler than Noel Fielding.
2) I went to see them when I'd just got my new Lotus, and thoroughly enjoyed the journey there and back (can't remember anything about the gig).
3) Their music is easy to bash out on the piano when you're drunk.
4) Bill Sharpe's gurning is just plain freaky.

Fatboy - I think it just demonstrates the sheer diversity of what was out there at the time. I'm beginning to sound a bit like my dad... but music now all seems to sound so bland and samey! Hip-hop, X-Factor divas, happy hardcore, etc. There are a few gems in the coal-heap - but not as many as in previous decades, I don't think. Maybe, as I say though, I'm just gettin' old...
Thanks, Pia. Great blasts from the past. That was another amazing decade, eh?

I remember the 'Tango In The Night' Album, pia. My sister used to have that and the single 'Little Lies'.
One of the best Albums of the 80’s, I think, was the Bangles ‘Different Light’ . Almost every track on the Album was a big hit and I remember when ‘Walk Like An Egyptian Came Out’, everyone was doing it. Anyone who doesn’t have the album ‘Different Light’, I would recommend it, just hummable, perfectly crafted pop rock tunes from beginning to end.

Fantastic tracks! Hang the DJ. Couldn't agree more!
Might as well have these, then...

I'm not a big Madonna fan but I like the whimsical tone and beatle-esque touches in this-
Dear Jessie:

I don't know if anyone has mentioned Paul McCartney but I think that, besides the 60's, the 80's were his best period.
Pipes Of Peace:

Another group that really says 80's to me is Madness:
Wings Of A Dove

Terrence Oblong | January 21, 2012 - 14:43
You put up Pipes of peace twice by mistake.
Wings of a dove good, but did you learn the dance to swan lake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myZ65SKBBUo

Yeah, Macca had some good stuff at the time. I had a Wings thing, too.
Here's a favourite Bowie track:
Modern Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJCBYUKMvMQ&feature=related
...and this song pulled me out of punk and into New Romantic, before I fell into Goth. I were a strange lad back then... a bit of a gad-fly. Not changed much!

I was pottering about watching some old footage of Mark Knoffler doing some guitar duets with Chet Akins - Imagine is great - and I wondered if there was any Notting Hillbillies and I found this…

It was so good it nagged me into reviving this old thread.
Highhat | February 11, 2012 - 19:28
I was just listening to Mark Knopfler when I read this. Beautiful Mangone- thanks...
Stan | February 11, 2012 - 19:56

Has this been posted already? Ah well... always worth another listen...

Here's some tragic news Stan.
Award winning Singer Whitney Houston dies!
Only 48, Whitney - who earned 6 Grammies - died on the eve of this year's Grammy awards.
I'll always remember her for her version of 'I Will Always Love You."
but there were so many other great performances...

It seems like a lot of the greats Feel Like Going Home.
One more for the heavenly choir...
I'll bet she does some great duets with Amy.

Another one, I think...
Stevie Nicks - Rooms on Fire

donignacio | February 16, 2012 - 02:01
Well... I came into this a little bit late, but I listen to '80s pop so much that I should be embarrassed. (Especially since I grew up in the '90s.) But anyway, here are some of my favorites lately that I don't *think* anyone mentioned.
The Lotus Eaters - Put Your Touch on Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjPRqx5oEXM
The The - This is the Day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phWv7l8Lm_A
ABBA - The Day Before You Came (This could be their masterpiece...)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPjRAOQxG9w
A-ha - The Swing of Things (It's not their well-known song, but I don't suppose any of you need to hear that one again!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H_K7gJ84rY
And my favorite song that decade...
Sat in Your Lap - Kate Bush
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33QiZ_593DY
Stan | February 16, 2012 - 10:45
Hey... some great choices there, Donignacio. Haven't heard The The for... well... decades!
Staying with the The The connection... just had to make the 100th post with a sweet little song that kind of kicked it all off for me:
The Smiths - William, It Was Really Bugger All...

I was 2 when this came out:

So needless to say I didn't catch it first time around.
The question is, do people know what film led me to it!?
jolono | February 16, 2012 - 19:37
I would guess Donnie Darko, I know it was featured on it!
ItsSteveDave | February 17, 2012 - 09:13
Yup, I also just realised the youtube link gives it away straight off the bat!

The Dubliners won the lifetime achievement award at the folk awards this year, who'd have thought it would take so long.
