That's Easy for You To Say

from the ABC set Warsaw Tales

Polish sounds like someone
crinkling newspapers
between their hands,
Magda told me.

swisha swisha swisha

you're right! I said.

and English sounds like
someone mumbling through a
mouth full of cake or
sweets, she continued.

wonwon mrumbla mrumbla

sure does, I chuckled, and
French sounds like someone
with a bad head cold
honking through their
nose like a seal:

ahn ahn hahnk hahnk

and Dutch sounds like
someone with a chicken bone
caught in their throat, I added:

graachchcht hwaachchcht

we laughed and laughed.

swisha swisha swisha
wonwon mrumbla mrumbla
graachcht graachcht

it's times like these that
make life worth living.
