Cake and the NHS

from the ABC set Musings

... A short speech on Cake and the NHS I gave on the 11/9/9, my mother challenged me to relate the two subjects and this is the abbreviated outcome, more is to follow.

There has been much debate on the subject of the health system in the United States at this moment. But let me put forward to you an idea. The NHS is like cake, as is any other healthcare system. Now, everyone knows there are different types of cakes, different ways of making, decorating and appreciating it. There are many variations in types of cake and the NHS is just one of them. Just because the NHS British "teacake" suits the UK doesn't mean that another sort of cake, or maybe even a cookie wouldn't suit the US. We all have different taste in cake and just because one cake is different from another, it doesn't make it less healthy or attractive. In fact one cake may even be smaller, healthier and less obstrusive than another but be unnattractive to a person simply depending on individual taste.

How about it's all about how we slice the cake of health funding? In the US they give all the money to the doctors and the insurance companies - here we choose to spread it more evenly so that there is enough to go round for everyone.

That is a good point! I am working on this little speech of mine and that shall certainly be included. The more you think about it, the better the seemingly random metaphor works.
