Lie Down

I lied about being invincible,
about being Canute’s descendant,
the thing about the Bond film
may have been exaggerated.
I should never have painted
that parrot black to impress
your toucan loving aunt.

My darling, such subterfuge
was never my intent-
I only knew one truth,
that you could never adore
the reality I had become.

If you had known how I lived,
that my window box was empty,
would you have still have caressed me
within a few inches of my life?
I admit, the three lottery wins,
all less than bona fide,
put a strain on our tenure,
but without my monopoly notes
would you have still kissed
my head into the stars?
