Down by the River

from the ABC set In the Absence of Change

It was down by the river when Charlie freaked out
And started singing songs about the old days
To me they were vague but she knew everything
Like when she gave me her number and then asked for a ring.
She claimed she was an angel once in a while
But hung out with scoundrels, the cadre of bile.

She was bitter and vibrant; I was jaded and lost.
They were the days when you paid without knowing the cost.
But all the children keep growing, I still feel like one too,
And there’s more to this world now than me, it’s true.
Whilst the angels keep singing I still don’t like the tune,
and my long since tired howling can’t quite reach the moon.

The winter sprung sinner will drunkenly fall
But the monsters still laugh and the beasts still walk tall.
Age stole my promise and replaced it with life.
Charlie’s my angel, Louise is my wife.
I guess we all go back there from time to time
But always alone and never at night.

It was down by the river when Charlie freaked out
When we went back to talk of the old days.
It’s been years since I thought of her and all of her spite,
The ring long since pawned to pay for the night.
She claims she’s the devil once in a while
And won’t hear the truth, I guess it’s denial.

This is really good in parts - but the metre is all over the place. Read it out loud and you'll hear what I mean. Work at it - it deserves it!

To be honest, I am planning on working at it more - I'm just making a personal effort to get to the stage where I put things out there more often instead of sitting on them until they turn to dust...

Noted though, watch this space for V 1.1 :)

v 1.1 as promised...
