Simplicity

from the ABC set Looking back - ideas and poems from my youth

Simplicity is form enough to tell
All that I see in the spread wings of your eyes,
Yet the silent rapture, the breathless swell,
Carries me away as my world denies
that as I am lost I don't want to be
Found. I choked and grasped for the fragile sun
Until I could fight no more. Now I see
That all I fought was my own, my frozen
Self. I wait in sadness, I wait in peace
For the distant flight of a bird in song
And pray that it will but alight an cease
Its constant flight for my destination.
Thee view of that sun-confounding dancer
Chastises the heart that wishes for her.
