GOD ONLY

from the ABC set A QUESTION OF FAITH

Yes I believe in God
I believe in God the father of all
I believe in the Ten Commandments
God handed to Moses
A better set of rules to live your life by
Does not exist
I’m not comfortable calling myself a Christian however
I was baptized a Christian
And raised as one
And I attend a Christian church
But I'm not a true Christian
I don’t turn the other cheek

I read this Biggus & it has preyed on my mind a little. By the by it helps me to start with my resolution to comment on the work of others. Firstly, it seems clear to me that the subject matter is very important to you & I guess that makes for interesting poetry.
The reason I do not call myself a Christian is that I do not accept Jesus Christ as my saviour. As I understand it Christ's covenant supersedes Moses'. So perhaps you are making that point. The Ten Commandments are old hat aren't they? Love thy Neighbour and accept Christ, that's all that's necessary isn't it? If you, or the voice of the poem, believes that not turning the other cheek is a disqualification that would seem to miss the whole point of a religion for imperfect people, all sinners together in Christ. Maybe that's it; is this a poem about contradiction?
