Fishing

from the ABC set A Tribute to...

Not one ripple troubles the lake
He sits in silence
Watching his line and waiting for a fish
To take his bait.
Shoulders hunched eyes intent on the water
Until they meet
The eyes of his reflection.

They stare at each other as though
They are strangers.

His reflection smiles, yet, he knows
That his mouth remains still…

Soon his reflection is laughing
Its eyes dancing merrily
Yet he cannot see the joke.

His people are hungry
And the fish won’t bite…
