Struggling

from the ABC set Life's Ups And Downs

I reach up high to catch the brightest star
yet seize instead, a cold and lifeless moon.
I stretch to aim higher but snatch too soon,
ambition too lofty, I fear too far.
An aperture appears, my minds ajar,
a peek within reveals an aging room;
cobweb hung with fusty ideas strewn
across a wide cerebration, to mar
every attempt at creativity.
My puny wit is pit against the best
in vain and vanity, in truth I strive;
at times able to achieve irony.
Recollections attained with childlike zest,
yet above all, pride, remains alive.

I think we all feel like this from time to time: writing about it helps, does it not?

I like the idea of reaching for the stars and attaining only the cold, lifeless moon. Still, if the moon were mine for sixpence, would it be any less high in the sky? Well, I´m sure you know what I mean: but in case that is not so, I think your poetry stands up extremely well in some very good company on this site alone.

Thank you Ewan, what a lovely thing to say, cheered me no end, I'm feeling a bit down at the moment, so thanks again for the lift. Val

I have to echo what Ewan said, Val - it happens to everyone. I've just got over my latest downer with poetry - I didn't write anything whilst on holiday and I had to force the pen into my hand when I got back! My advice is just ride the wave, keep fighting and you'll come out the other side ;)

And if this is what comes out of 'feeling a bit down' you have nothing to worry about. There's some beautiful imagery here, especially in the first few lines ;)
