A wonderful Greeting

from the ABC set Nature's Glory

I couldn’t believe my eyes!
A Song Thrush?
Here… on the fence
outside my conservatory window.
Singing his little heart out
for me, or so it seemed.

How long had it been
since I had seen his like
or heard such a melodious voice?

Usually it’s a pair of Collard Doves
or at best a Blackbird calling to his mate
who wakes me in the dawn light.
Not so this morning, there he was,
large as life…no mistake.

Yesterday, I thought I had heard a cuckoo
calling, up by the golf course,
But decided it had been wishful thinking.
Now I wonder; perhaps after all
I should trust my instincts.

The garden is alive with Spring,
the May already budding.
Blood red Rhododendron
shocking beneath the soft
blue pendants of the wisteria
climbing busily over the garage walls.
And there by the field ash
the cream and mauve of the Lilacs
just beginning to bloom.

Out by the door
a planter of Rosemary and thyme
unselfishly share their fragrance
with the rest of the garden
where the golden light of the sun
overlay all…
How wonderful to be alive.

The joys of spring and life, brought to life! Lovely piece that paints a picture of spring. Still waiting for the first cuckoo. Well done.

Val, I am so pleased you are back! And what a beautiful poem. We too have loads of collared doves amd I usually mistake them for the sound of the cuckoo. But this year I really have heard my first one in the copse to the back of my garden. And yes, how wonderful it sure is to be alive.
