Unfortunately, it is our desire to preserve life at all cost which has led to this. There is no further evolution going on, rather an idea that to preserve life at all costs is right. It isn't. If you have ever been to a severely disabled children's ward where the parents never come and the child is abandoned to the care of the state you would know what I mean. The same applies to old people's homes. Many old folk are kept alive, in distress, on drugs so severe that the quality of life is non-existent. Working with these people is what changed my mind. Now I see starving people kept barely alive in misery on a subsistence diet provided by the rich countries. Why? They have no joy in life and no pleasure and their future is a black hole;. it is actually CRUEL to do this, in my opinion.

I don't think it is cruel to give starving people food. And it is not cruel to care for people with dementia or mental handicap. I would say it is the opposite of cruelty. Maybe not compassion, but an attempt at helping.
I've also worked with people like that. Invariably we fuck up, but something is better than nothing.
