Sheep Eating Grass

from the ABC set Inside Elephant

The ground was soft and the air was peaty.
Forty soldiers, mad and meaty,
burst from their tanks
and jumped from the sky,
practising war and pretending to die.
The noise filled the mountains ......
explosions of mud!
Din of blank cartridges!
Clamour for blood!
And there on a hillside,
bolder than brass,
dafter than brushes,
sheep eating grass.

"practising war and pretending to die."

Very classical poetry. Love the line above. Much enjoyed. Well done.

Nathan.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful poem! Reminds me of Henry Reed's classic WWII poem, The Naming of the Parts, the way you contrasted the childishness of military maneuvers with the pastoral.

Once I saw some chickens eating up a whole heap of grass. Unreal. Goofed chickens they couldn't get enough they finished the whole bush. Those chickens were never the same. Yes the picture you sketch of sheep eating grass in such blissful ignorance is really quite classic.
