Until I only had one, I never noticed just how many jokes, verbal and visual, make reference to breasts. From Carry On movies to TV sitcoms, the breast is a good natured figure of fun. When you are fresh from your mastectomy this can make you feel a bit left out. Don’t these people realise that some of us are one boob short of a picnic?
You might even feel a bit offended. It’s as if your favourite TV shows are rubbing your nose in it. And then there are all the bad taste jokes about cancer. I saw two of these in the weeks following my operation (serves me right for watching E4) and I came over all indignant and self righteous. Then, a few weeks later I found myself watching the politically incorrect satirical comedy Thank You For Smoking about the tobacco industry trying to prove that smoking and lung cancer are unrelated. It is shameless but hilarious. I also found myself roaring with laughter at a Mitchell and Webb sketch where one man told another of his cancer at his wedding. Hilarious. Thank you TV for reminding me that I have a sense of humour.
Remember, they have removed your boob not your personality. Let yourself laugh.

You kindled the spark of a much-cherished memory, Christine ...Of when, having just come round from her op. and phoning home she asked,
"How do you fancy a daughter with a newly acquired, 'John Wayne smile'?"
Sense of humour - the sixth sense. Indispensable.
Well said, again;-)
