A lot of circuses
must have closed,
leaving the clowns
to wander the streets.
Singularly, they’re tragic
but in groups,
they’re dangerous,
possessing enough
unbridled stupidity
to stun an elephant.
They text while walking,
crash into people,
blame everyone else
for their own mistakes;
they ignore traffic signals
and park their ridiculous
cars anywhere they please.
They have no control
over their compulsions,
preferring to act
instead of thinking
about trivialities
like repercussions
and codes of conduct.
What makes it
even more difficult
is most of them
have stopped wearing
their makeup
so they look
just like you and me.

Can only agree with all the praise - I also like the term poemhead that Blighters has coined and will use it now whenever I can. :-)

Blighter, thanks for your thoughtful comment, mate. It seems as though the default state for many people these days is indignation. The unfortunate result is it becomes infectious and spreads to even the most gentle of souls. It is heartbreaking.

I will proudly wear 'poemhead' - in fact, I'm going to have a t-shirt made up declaring me so. Thanks!

Blighter, I like the idea of having a poem on the back - I was going to simply put "I'm A Poemhead' on the front but your idea might make a better graphic anyway. Thanks for the inspiration!

Brilliant (I think someone's already said that), and very well observed. I never thought of these people as clowns... but from now on I'll see if I can spot traces of their make-up. Steve
