I Don’t Get Leonard Cohen

from the ABC set Poetry & Song Lyrics

I don’t get Leonard Cohen,
even though he writes good songs.
However, if he sings them,
I think they just sound wrong.

I don’t get Bob Dylan;
his voice has no appeal.
Yet if his songs are sung by others,
they quite often sound unreal.

I don’t get Lori Anderson
or for that matter, Grace Jones.
Neither have done anything I like
which is why I leave them alone.

I don’t get Lou Reed much either,
though his Transformers is much touted;
I always thought he was a pretender
and just waited for him to be outed.

Thankfully, I do get The Beatles,
and I’m quite fond of the Stones too.
There are so many more I do get,
who cares if I don’t get these few?

Extremely witty...and I do 'get' what you're saying about Leonard Cohen. He is, unreservedly a brilliant writer but I prefer to hear others, more suited, singing his compositions.

As for Bob Dylan, 'I know where you're coming from' . He doesn't have the most appealing of voices, but no one can 'sing' them like him.

An interesting poem, which really got me to thinking.

All before my time, but I enjoyed this one nevertheless! I too am very partial to 'The Beatles and the Stones' ;)

With the exception of Lori Anderson and Grace Jones, I like the others; I was at a Dylan concert in Dublin before Christmas and while his voice sounded like gravel being poured down a drain pipe, he still can't do any wrong for me. I went to see Leonard Cohen at the same venue and - for me - he sounds better now than he did, when he started; it really was a super show. I remember them, the first time around and I suppose it is harder to fall out of love after so long.
Like the piece D. (but love Dylan more lol)

Lenchenelf, good morning to you too. Thanks for your comment :)

Tina, my wife and I write a music review blog and we're amazed by how many male artists can get away with not having great voices (or looks) provided they write 'heart-felt, intelligent' lyrics. The females, unfortunately, have to be attractive and have incredible voices. Bit one sided, we think.

I've loved Dylan's songs for years but his voice still doesn't appeal to me. I guess I just don't have the right ears for him.

Thanks for your considered comment.

Magic, glad you are able to leap that damned generation gap and enjoy this one. Thanks :)

Dynamaso | April 15, 2010 - 03:20

Chris, I've never seen either in concert but for this, I consider myself lucky ;) 'Hallelujah' is one of my favourite songs of all time (the Jeff Buckley version, alas). And as I said to Tine, I've loved (and performed) quite a number of Dylan's songs over the years but couldn't get past his voice.

Thanks for your comment, mate.

Insertponcey... ah, musical taste is so subjective, isn't it? There is probably a list of bands I adore that would probably make you shudder. Lou Reed also has written some absolute gems but his voice just grates on me.

Thanks for commenting. :)

Excellent poem Mark, and I agree with everything you say with the exception of Grace Jones.... This one passed me by as I've never heard any of this lady's records.
Along with the Beatles and Stones I'd put Ray Davies and the Kinks.

Steve, I'd also add The Who, David Bowie, Led Zep, Pink Floyd and the myriad others I left off. I figured it all started with The Beatles and The Stones, so they deserved the mention.

Glad you enjoyed this, mate. Check out my little story 'No Less, No More' when you get the time. It is an IP response but I'm going to use the characters for a few other shorts I have in mind.

Yeah dylan is always a question mark for me.
Though I heard his song Isis on a tape of songs my cousin gave me and its quite fantastic (though it makes no f'ing sense)

Dynamaso | May 11, 2010 - 04:13

Mike, I really do admire both Dylan and Cohen as songwriters (Cohen's 'Hallelujah' is one of my most favourite songs, but the version done by Jeff Buckley, not the man himself).

'Isis' is one of Dylan's more obscure tracks but he does have such a way with words, doesn't he?
