I Remember

from the ABC set Poetry

I remember;

You, pale in the light,
dust motes flying
as you fling yourself at me
like I’m the last living man.
It was only then
I realised I was dead,
inside and out,
before I met you.

I remember;

Standing in your doorway
barely able to breath;
your arms crushing me
but I didn’t want you
To ever let go.
All the while
you’re repeating,
like a mantra,

Thank you,
Thank you,
Thank you,

When it was I
Who should have been giving thanks.

I remember;

Your tear-wet face
pressed in my chest,
sobs so thick and heavy
my very soul shook
with resonant sadness,
while my ego-laden
pride-filled, stubborn head
still said I had to go.

I remember;

Closing the door,
pulling the key from the lock
while you peeked out
from behind a curtain.
As sad as you were
you smiled slightly
and my world
lit up once again.

I remember;

Like it could have been
yesterday.
Or like it might be
tomorrow.
So here’s to yesterdays had
and tomorrows yet to come.
The memory of you
Sustains it all.

What a bastard to leave, why?! why?!

Sometimes two hearts just don't go together right, no matter how hard you both try.

this evokes the moment so well and leaves a sense of loss.

Loss and sadness are such powerful motivators, aren't they? Thanks for reading.

True, but so sad!

Jennifer, it was sad, believe me. But as the saying goes, whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. What they don't say is the bruise it leaves never goes away, though.
