I Shall Ask No More Of You

from the ABC set Poetry

I shall ask no more of you,
For your scuppered charms won’t hold.
Time has enveloped you kindness,
Stolen your once-strong resolve.

Yes, I shall ask no more of you
But if you want to help you can;
Lend me your age-acquired wisdom,
Help me to understand.
Why do you make it difficult
When I only speak to you with ease?
Has the lightness of your heart faded?
Are you now so hard to please?

I shall ask no more of you
Than I think you would deserve.
The flames of passion you once burnt
Are now fuelled by angry reserve.
I would like to bring you comfort,
If you’d allow yourself to say,
Why you feel so miserable
With the passage of each day?

Hear, I shall ask no more of you
Nor for your scuppered will to prevail.
So rest you head my sorry, sad friend,
Listen to the widow’s wail.

really enjoyed this. has a subtle charm and deliberate pace that really provides an emotional core. the repetition as well never grows tired. last line was especially effecting.

reminds me of a line from Casino Royale (yes, a James Bond film):

I have no armor. You've stripped it from me. Whatever is left. Whatever I am. I'm yours.

Thanks for your considered comments, Mike, much appreciated. I've seen Casino Royale. In fact, I think it is the best Bond movie (I know - a large call but I believe Daniel Craig will prove to be the best Bond ever. I really like the darker tone taken with Casino Royale and am looking forward to seeing Quantum of Solace).
