Resignation

They called me into a meeting,
asked me to reconsider –
we’ve put the vacancy on hold, they said,
in case you change your mind.
They seem to think it’s some
youthful folly, a springtime whimsy
to run away from the city and
start over afresh.
They don’t know I’ve done it
so many times that the tracks
of my optimism are worn to a thread;
they don’t know what it’s like
to head blindly towards nothing
exactly because there’s nothing left.
Some things just can’t translate.
I’d really like to stop running one day.
I want to stop fighting the wolves all alone
and come through the cold shadows
to a clearing and say, this is home.
I think I can stay here.
