Fame (What's your name?)

from the ABC set

And the girls liked David Timor,
but I liked Johnny Pope,
whose guitar sounded like
he had razors for fingers.

David came from Acton and his
real name was Derek Smith
- but we're all our alter
egos, under the spotlight.

We lived for every cliché;
from the contract with a
salesman to the drummer's
death - in the Sheraton's loos.

It's true that no-one knows
the name of the bassist,
like in that film by Tom
Hanks - or in Dr Feelgood.

I carried all the cases for
the guitars and the drums,
played the boogie-woogie 'til
the salesman squirmed along.

Now David has investments,
Johnny Pope's a Mormon now,
the bassist's in their tribute band
- and the pianist is me.

Could be worse. Imagine how James Phelge feels.

I reckon he feels a right Nanker.

Love the title (big Bowie fan). I enjoyed this although I am not sure who either of the musicians are (and googling them doesn't help at all). The line 'whose guitar sounded like he had razors for fingers' makes me think he might have played a Telecaster.

I made them up... so I bloody hope you didn't find them... I hope you found Nanker and Phelge though.

I did actually find numerous mentions of (Dr.) Johnny Pope, who happens to be a Baptist Minister who records his sermons for all to download, if interested. Weird bit of synchronicity, that.

As for Nanker Phelge, I was aware of this being a Rolling Stones pseudonym, but did you know it was also the name of a short-lived Aussie 'super-group'?

Ah, google, you've done it again.

Yes, I'd heard of them, but never heard them!
