February Morning

from the ABC set The Long and the Short of It...

It’s the time for wood-smoke;
olive trees are being stripped,
straw hats bend over the piled
and twisted wooden limbs,
the snapcrackle flames riskily close.
The bitter smell obscures
and shortens further
the brief glory
of the almond blossom.

Ewan, I liked this and also left a comment a while ago under the short piece A Person of Note. I get a sense of cold winter, early spring and the clarity of the twisted grotesque branches against the clear blue sky. It has the condensed effect of a haiku (but an eight line one). Do you like HD and the Imagists?

Thanks for the heads up about your other comment. I know TC is looking into a notification system for them. I felt it had a haiku effect although of course as you say it is more the zen-moment feel of the language,since the form is different.

All I know of Imagism is Ezra Pound.Even so it's a surprise that H.D. Imagiste didn't ring a bell. I never cease to be amazed at my own ignorance. So I think I'll have a look at some other Imagists.

Thanks for your comments.

I tried seeing myself by the fire and can't decide if this makes me feel cold and bleak with the dying of the almond, or if it feels warm and cosy. I look forward to June and July when you're writing about blistering heat and gorgeous life. I loath winter.

Another good one from you, you always deliver(though I haven't had my free garlic bread)
