Idiot Box

from the ABC set

I am coming cheerfully round
to the proposition
that there is poetry
in idiocy.

Dear old Roo happily states
he'll draw a line under
the sand - as surreal
as you like it.

Perhaps he 'shouldn't of' tried
for the warm cliché, but
kept shtumm, left interviews
to managers.

So, still smiling, wryly perhaps,
at new Malaprops with
belief tautological
in a damp squid,

I am holding painfully back
from the television;
finding a replacement
too expensive.

But I'm just an elitist boor,
there's no listening
to - or by - anyone:
so we talk cock.

Once again, over my head. I know it's clever, but too clever for me to work out...!

It's not clever Jen, you just need to have an idiot box to understand the majesty of a Wayne Rooney post-match interview.

Roone Wayney
Is quite brainy
But he'll need a helping hand
To draw a lion under the sand.

I love that line. Such a brutal (and honest) appraisal of human communication in most cases.

I'm listening Ewan. So are jennifer, FTSE and eezy77. Feel any better?

Ewan | March 5, 2009 - 14:24

Naw... of course not. I'm enjoying being grumpy.

Ah, I do not have a television and I am not a football enthusiast, now I see what you're on about!

Yeah, Jen, I knew you didn't have a TV, you have mentioned it before, that's why I said the poem wasn't clever. One thing you'll be spared is all the sloppy, sloppy English that abounds in the BBC. I don't want to go back to the days of RP, but if there's a cliche to be misused, it will be roundly assaulted on an hourly basis during supposedly hard news programmes.

Anyway, about your boat, is it a narrowboat?

Don't try to change the subject, Ewan. You're just annoyed because your team lost. ;)
