Old Money

from the ABC set

A penny for my thoughts,
though they're a tuppenny
-ha'penny business.
Two farthings might buy
a small goat;
in my dreams! I'd be
chuffed to thru'p'nies
if it really did.
A tanner poke'll cost
more than a bob, now.
The pink of a ten-shilling
note in a birthday card
is a distant, if thrilling,
memory.

Those were the days! I earned two pounds from my paper round and turned it all into pennies, four hundred and eighty of them, so I'd feel rich. Why were pennies so much more impressive than sixpences? Half-crowns were a goodly size, but you didn't get nearly as many of them for your money.

And what about those old fivers? Anyone remember them? They were big and looked like legal documents.

A fiver? I was obviously doing the wrong paper round! No point having a fiver because nobody had enough money to give you change.

An 'ouse? We used ter dream o' livin' in an 'ouse! And you tell the young people of today that...
