Sound Advice

from the ABC set

It’s time to accept defeat
to sign the armistice
and withdraw the pen from use
thereafter.

Remain a gifted amateur:
use the shield of insouciance
to deflect the barbs of critical
mockery.

Keep close your counsel and write
in secret,your words hidden:
a writer’s skin is inside out, nerves
uppermost.

Protect your pitiful pride
from the worst of all:
the pricks of opinion hurt less than
indifference.

Wearing their nerves on their sleeves...as opposed to hearts perhaps.

The phrase...to wear your heart on your sleeve - your line re nerves uppermost made me think of writers wearing their nerves on their sleeves rather than their hearts. Perhaps it makes less sense than I thought! A light hearted comment.

Sorry, been taking the sensitive pills!

I guess we will both keep accepting those "pricks of opinion" because once a writer, always a writer.
