Blue

from the ABC set A Doughnut Sends A Postcard Home

The day retreats,
gives in too easily to the darkness.
We huddle, dredge our collective thoughts,
watch as they tarnish across bars
of electric heat. Somewhere among the
hapless years we find a moment -
a place where it all seemed to belong.
I wipe my slippers clean of snow,
stare into my mug and sense your lips move.

“Do you remember the journey we
would have to take? The small boat,
father and son who greeted us by name
before the end of the week, the engine
fighting the flimsy current, progress made
despite what our eyes told us through
the porthole. Your relief as the quay
neared, your grip on the rail tighter,
but still you stepped aside so I might pass.
What I think we had then was a love
of the journey itself, of the movement from
one place to the next, despite your fears.”

Outside nothing moved nor made a sound.

“What comes back to me above all was your
false bravado on the journey home,
how you stared, as now, across the darkness,
looking for the line of separation between
the sky and all things -
searching for blue.”

Hi fatboy74,

this is a beautiful poem, full of memories, I like
that.

Thankyou for a great read.

Jenny.

fatboy74 | November 29, 2010 - 10:32

Thanks Jenny, inspired by the inspiration point but made its own way onto the page, sometimes it feels like automatic writing, almost like I have no control over where it is going. Enjoy your week and thanks for you really kind comments. :-)

fatboy74 | November 30, 2010 - 13:12

Wow. Tony that was completely unexpected but greatly appreciated - many thanks and pleased you liked it. I can get back to marking the GCSE resits a happier man now! :-) :-)

luigi_pagano | November 30, 2010 - 14:02

Excellent, fatboy74. You can rest on your laurels for a little while; don't rush to find a pen and an envelope (at 15mph!) just yet.

Cheers, Luigi.

Just beautiful, fatboy. For once, I am speechless;-)

Hi Luigi, many thanks, yes I think you're right, but who knows where the inspiration may strike next! :-)

Hi Tina - thanks, I'm really glad you enjoyed this - almost an IP but I only managed one blue! Was trying to catch up with your readings on Amazing Radio - can you listen to them again on the catch up section or do you have to be listening at the time? :-)

Yutka | November 30, 2010 - 21:41

I love the nostalgia and how you describe the bravado and fear of travel. The last stanza is superb!
"....separation between the sky and all things" , food for thought

Yutka:)

fatboy74 | December 1, 2010 - 08:21

Great to hear from you Yutka and thanks so much for reading and saying such kind things. This was a memory of a trip to Northern Portugal we took about five years ago - I think its nostalgia for the warm sunshine more than anything else - although I am still a big kid about the snow! :-)

Beautiful.

fatboy74 | December 1, 2010 - 10:01

I have to admit Seashore that I wish I had some of your talent for using colour when I wrote this poem, I may have done better than just 'blue'! Glad you liked this and thanks for reading. :-)

seashore | December 1, 2010 - 15:19

Thank you for that lovely compliment but trust me you did just fine. It works perfectly the way it is.
Incidentally I tried and failed to do anything `blue' - clearly not my colour.
PS. I now have my nose in Birthday Letters again!

Bradene | December 1, 2010 - 16:21

I've only just caught up with this, it's really beautiful and wonderfully evocative. Well done. Val

rjnewlyn | December 1, 2010 - 18:32

Yes, it does wonderful things with memory and the sense of past and present colliding.

Hi Seashore, since our conversation I've been looking for mine and can't find it! Thanks for those lovely comments and the chat, much enjoyed. :-)

Hi Val, really pleased you liked this and thanks for kind comments. I always feel like i'm playing catch-up on ABC there's just too much on here - which I think is a good thing. :-)

Yes, i'm pleased that worked Rob and that you liked this, you'll be pleased to know I've asked Father Christmas for the collected poems of Edward Thomas which I'm looking forward to enjoying over the holiday season in deepest darkest Norfolk. I'm sure on my return I will be bursting with creativity and will inflict my urban-gangsta-political-post-post-modern offerings to one and all - or i'll keep trying to re-write Adlestrop - forever. :-)

Hi! Well deserved cherry!
But I too like this poem, especially
weaving story of travel into it.Hope
you get your book, don't know many poets.
Deep deep snow here,cars covered.
Norfolk is that under snow, pretty sight,
used go Walsingham The Holy Shrine.
Keep writing, got a lot to catch up on top.
Enjoyed all this great.Keep warm.

fatboy74 | December 2, 2010 - 14:01

Thanks Julie, I think keep warm is sound advice. Thanks for a lovely comment. I have been to Walsingham a few times and it's very beautiful, we always go to Weybourne on holiday - i'm quite looking forward to taking the kids down to the beach on christmas day, i'm hoping for snow but its always a long shot. Thanks for your encouragement and support - ABC has been a bit fiesty of late! :-)

rjnewlyn | December 2, 2010 - 14:20

Oh well, you should have a good Christmas then. I think I've said it before somewhere but ET's Lights Out is up there with my favourites. And the one that starts "Out in the dark, over the snow ..." (can't remember the title).

Rob

fatboy74 | December 2, 2010 - 14:38

I read Lights Out after your recommendation and also thought it was wonderful, i'll look out for the other one you mentioned. I've also asked for a copy of Keith Douglas' collected work after I saw a programme about him on BBC Four. Get well soon Rob. :-)

Another golden-oldy I'm thankful to have stumbled on at 1 in the morning. A beautiful collection of memories, a vignette of love and such stunning details.

fatboy74 | August 2, 2011 - 00:04

Thanks for finding this one maggy and for your kind words. It feels strange to read an older poem that I haven't read for ages - in fact it feels nice - thank you. :-)
