My Answering Machine

from the ABC set Poems

You left a message on my phone,
I sit awaiting your call;
But hours pass, I realize
You'll never ring at all.

In my arms I hold you close;
But, no, it cannot be.
In my arms instead are only
Clothes you left with me.

I cannot move,
My heart is tied,
Knotted but I'm still alive.

And the words that you last spoke to me
Are lost somewhere between.
Death will never take you from my answering machine.

But one day soon,
When time has passed
Your message will be gone,
And the lady in the telephone,
Will tell me I have none.
