We were warned

We were warned
but we didn't listen.

We continued on the
same road without turning off.

We ignored the signs
leading onto slip-roads.

We eased off the pedals
A little but that was all...

Raising children in the
back-seat and attending
to funerals in the wing
mirrors.

We didn't stop to think.
We were warned about the
final destination but we
didn't listen.

This piece is very thought provoking. Climate change is unstoppable now, I think, even if people do make an effort. Business won't cut emissions in the East - there's a very large market to be tapped. Then we have all the Not In My Backyarders.
Its a simple choice. Windmills now or deserts later?

Thanks for your comment. That would be a good title for a poem, 'Windmills now or deserts later'! A bit more proactive than my fatalistic number.
I'm not keen on writing poems about 'big subjects' really but I've been using overheard lines from conversations recently and just heard someone on the train say "We were warned" and it came from there...

I'll write about anything. xx

NIMBY

Windmills now
Or deserts later?
Newts in the stream
Or alligators?
Midges and flies
Or biting mosquitos?
More runways
And clean power vetos?
"Not in my backyard!"
"But we must save Nature."
Well then, windmills now
Or deserts later?
