Windows

Who’s behind the baggy-arse curtains?
yesterday I saw a couple making out in their living room
I tried not to stare and I’m sure they
were quite oblivious to my gaze
so I decided to leave them to it
at other times I look out the window
and see the neighbour woman across the way
sitting on the balcony, smoking,
together with other muslim women with headscarves and djelabas
this is not unusual to see
some evenings during the warm months, they gather at the tables and benches outside
not smoking mind you
they only do that when the men are not around
and only at home
noone wears a burca
they’re not banned like in France
well this is the way of some
in a moment the kids will come out to play
the peace and quiet will be over
I hope they have a good time and don't get too bored with anything
well at least I have enjoyed
the mornings complete tranquillity
save the distant hum of vehicles on the
highway
it’s not like when I lived in the backcountry
nobody’s drunk here
at least not early in the morning
but it’s a rough area
I hardly notice it
don’t walk around the streets much
when I do I just breathe deep
and hope I am not witness to any trouble
or don’t get involved at all
it’s nice to have a home
where my loved ones can visit and stay for a while
I like my life
no great obligations
no major responsibilities
just the easy life
the kids have moved away
and I don’t feel lonely
sometimes I don’t even bother to cook dinner
so I just have a piece of toast and a glass of water
coffee in the morning
a smoke
I like my smokes but I constantly have a bad conscience
because it is pretty bad manners to smoke
and when I visit my sisters and my oldest son it is absolutley not
IN to smoke so I have to go outside
I don’t want to quit
my sisters sometimes go on about
my bad habits
I try not to listen
I can’t do much about it
I don’t think it is that dire
at least there is peace and quiet early in the morning
it’s really quite ok
just love these cool summer mornings
all doors and windows open
not a breeze

I liked this, so atmospheric.

"...just love these cool summer mornings all doors and windows open not a breeze..."

Sitting on your little balcony watching the world drift by, lovely.

Hey Pia,

love this Baggy-arse piece, you have everything in
it, including the nice quiet life, which I can
definitely relate too.

I think it's just perfect to let the world go on,
and just relax and not feel guilty about not being
busy, just doing what you want to do.

Again a perrrrrrfect! read. Thankyou.

Jenny.

Thanks all for your kind comments. I am glad you liked it.
I think I'll just leave it as it is but I am a bit inquisitive to know what you meant by which tweaks Jackie?

;)Pia

Louise178 | June 6, 2011 - 14:09

Pia it has so much warmth and earthines and humaness if there is such a word, I love it, but I wouldn't know where to start with tweaking it,

a piece of toast, a glass of water
a smoke and coffee in the morning

but that's just my taste, there are just so many ideas in here, it's brilliant :)

Highhat | June 6, 2011 - 16:35

Thanks a lot Jackie- nice of you to show interest.
I'm really pleased you liked it. I may change the title though- it's a bit offensive methinks!

Hi Pia,

just noticed you changed the title, that's a shame
because I thought it was funny.

A bit like my baggy arse! he! he.

But I like the new title as well.

Jenny.

Highhat | June 7, 2011 - 18:29

Hi Jenn- yeah I thought it was a bit too blatant so I changed it. You know we have a saying here where you call certain kitchen curtains baggy arse curtains- that is a direct translation . I don't know what you call them in England. They almost cover the whole window and are sort of gathered on each side of the window. They can be incredibly ugly and anyway they block most of the light out so I don't have them.
It's just for fun really!
