Dear Captain Cook aka dear Tony,
Yesterday was Thursday. Today is Friday. This is logic for guinea fowls.
Nevertheless . . . Yesterday I was anticipating today because I had an idea that you might put a new I.P on the site. Bingo! There it was this morning- well not that early but pretty close to early and at least before noon, so morning is a broad term for me having gotten out of bed at approx. 5am. Not to see the I.P for the week on print but because I woke up that early and felt like getting out of bed. I usually wake up early. I love the mornings especially in Spring when the transition between darkness and the first light is filled with joyful expectancy, not knowing what sort of weather we are going to have. I.e whether the sun is going to shine or if it is going to be a dismally grey day. Sometimes I see the weather report on the telly and then I kinda know what’s in store for the next day but just as often I don’t see it and that is what brings on the extra good feeling in the morning. Well today was no different. I pulled the curtains apart and lo and behold! The sun wasn’t going to show up on the horizon, all round and red and orange and warm. Oh, never mind., I thought ,I will just make myself a pot of coffee and see what the day brings- weather-wise.
I wasn’t expecting to see the I.P already plastered on the site but I did turn on ABC quite early. Of course it wasn’t there. Nobody in their right mind had met for work at abc yet. I mean, the time was about 6am and it was only now that my coffee was starting to pick me up from the sleepiness to deliver me to the day and perish the thought of the staff at abc busying yourselves with, well with . . . .us.
I thought it would be nice to see if anyone had dropped off a comment to some of the stuff I had posted yesterday. It is always a bit exciting to see how one’s pieces are accepted, if they are accepted at all.
I was thinking that perhaps I would be able to just catch last weeks I.P as I had an idea but it sort of slipped my mind as I had another cup of coffee and another cigarette. I did actually have a couple of pieces of toast . That would be in my son’s spirit as he once remarked how I could smoke before breakfast. Poor boy- but he smokes too- naughty boy!
I can’t remember precisely what time I had another lookout for the I.P- maybe around 10 and several cups of coffee, a couple of damn annoying telephone calls and yes some smokes later.
There it was.
Desiderate.
One word.
Omg what does that mean? Is it in the same family as considerate? No.
You did try to give us a good hint as to the meaning but it left me looking like a question mark. Luckily nobody could see me as I was all alone and only the walls could hear me sighing- oh no I don’t know what it means! I mean you or even somebody else, though I mainly suspected you Tony , had just coughed up this word and left it to . . .us to find out what it meant. Of course- we could just look it up if we didn’t already know. I didn’t know.
Great because just looking at the word and the little hint as to what it meant left me blank as an undescribed page.
So I looked it up.
I flicked through the pages of Roget’s Thesaurus , published in 1987 with all the words for the 90’s that you could possibly need.
We are no longer in the 90’s. We are anno 2011. It’s still Friday- in April to be precise and no- the word was nowhere to be found in Roget’s.
Where did you dig up this word ? Maybe it was antiquated and didn’t actually exist anymore? No! Roget’s have been publishing since 1852. That is of course no garantee for the fact that the word may very well have fallen out of the English language. Nope it hasn’t. I was still a bit of a question mark. I usually swear by Roget’s. It is at least as thick as the bible and it is a paperback.
It would never be in my translation dictionary. I was sure of that. I was wrong- well almost mistaken.
No desiderate again.
Desideratum- was there. A desideratum- there it was translated into danish.
Thank god. I had learned something now for sure. I had the meaning confirmed and elaborated with a sentence which I cannot repeat as it is in danish.
What I would like to say to you Tony, is that your I.P was tricky and if I hadn’t known you to be a kind person I would have suspected you for delivering a deliberately and decidedly unwanted I.P but as it is you have once again given us bread to feed on which leaves us with the butter with which to spread on it.
I would say that I make it a desideratum to oblige your kindness. I know that doesn’t explain the word very well but you know what it means anyway and I am not sure whether I do yet ,fully. Oh dear!
Cheers
A very content user of Abctales-
;)Pia xx

Pia, this did make me smile.
My reaction, first thing this morning, was exactly the same as yours. The only thing I knew about the word, was a poem called 'Desiderata' (a poem with questionable authorship and copyrighted in 1927 by one Max Ehrmann) The word 'desiderata' is,in fact, the plural of 'desideratum', which is the noun of the verb 'desiderate'...if that makes it any clearer. It's as clear as mud to me;-)
Anyway, as I said, I really enjoyed your story, Pia and loved the little twist at the end. A highly original stab at this week's highly original I.P.;-)

Yes Tina we really have to stab at them sometimes, don't we? I am so glad you got to read this one. Thanks

Hi Pia,
I'm completely lost with that word desiderate, I have
looked it up and I'm still none the wiser. Even after
reading Tina's take on the word, I still don't get it.
You have written a nice long newsy piece here, that
was very interesting. I think your IP is great.
Jenny.

Thanks Jenny- that is very encouraging- to be quite honest I don't think I would ever use the word on a daily basis- ha ha naughty Tony

I liked this Pia - and I can definitely identify with, firstly never having heard of the word desiderate, and secondly, the coffee and cigarettes first thing in the morning!

Thank you Overthetop. Glad you could relate to this.

This made me smile - especially the image of flapping through Roget's trying to work out if you're missing something (been there!). It's also nice to see you do prose - it's a cheeky take, and I approve.

I'm glad you approve BBG- that makes me feel a lot more comfortable. Yes this was a bit cheeky, wasn't it?
Thank you for popping by
