Elephants with spindly legs
pop the bubbles of my champagne
sending intoxicating gases to my brain.
My wisdom expands
beyond the viscose dress and cardigan
which cover my rounded stomach
and ageing legs
I am dishing out advice
with the canapes as
I circulate with the rictus smile
of the omnipresent hostess
I am
a melting barometer of the hour
The temperature rises as I pass and everyone
is elevated to meet my mood.
Red velvet cushions my spiked feet
as I delicately pick my way home
and the world shifts sideways towards me.
