Lonely Old Dog

At the end of line at the back of a cage
Sits a lonely dog who's getting on in age
Been there for months, coming up for a year
His family left him, not one drop of a tear.
People have come and looked into his eyes,
Took him for walks, some even cried.
But no-one yet has taken him home in the warm.
No-one protecting him from cold and the storm.
Days have come and days slowly go,
All on his own in the rain and the snow.
Other dogs came and people would come
And take other dogs into their home.
He was getting more lonely and very sad.
He had been very good, never been bad.
Oh what could he do, he couldn’t say,
One night he decided that he would pray.
The dog heard a noise, a light at the door
A golden glow lit up his kennel floor.
An angel had come to speak to the lad
I heard your prayer, so don’t be so sad.
Tomorrow I promise a family will come
Two little girls, their dad and their mum.
Their dog just died, I have taken her up,
So now they are looking for another pup.
I have told them about you and your long wait
So please be prepared and be at your gate
Sure enough the family came to take him away
And he made up for lost time from the very next day.
