The Denim Jacket.
When I was eighteen I had a very good friend named Jan-Lyon. Me and him where such good friends that we wore the same jackets. He had one, and he persuaded me to by one as well. Him, myself, my brother and my girlfriend, rode out to Oriental Plaza one Saturday, where these jackets were available. After some haggling with the Indian dealer, I bought it for sixty rand, which was quite a bit of money in those days to pay for a jacket.
The jacket was dark blue and of very strong denim. The shoulders where light blue. It had a padded lining on the inside, and it had a lot of pockets, including a pocket on the inside. It was very high quality and good-looking jackets. I always wore it wherever I travelled, and also when I walked the streets.
On the street, a jacket such as this is called a ‘lumber’ (short for lumber-jacket) or just a ‘lumba’ for short. I was the envy of all I encountered on the streets because of my magic lumba. I was very fond of that jacket and came to love it dearly over the years. I undertook many adventures and hitch-hiking trips in that jacket. This was from 1987-1993. When I got rid of jacket, it was too old and worn for me to use further, but I am sure that the chap I gave it to still got some good use out of it.
Now I have bought a new jacket. I got it cheap at a second hand store, and it is actually more of a surfer-jacket. It is also quite nice, and I plan to get good use out of it as well.
But I still have many fond memories of my old denim jacket.
The End.
