He was walking among the vineyards and looking at the new grapes on the vine. It was autumn and nearly time for the harvest. It was a rich man’s land and like many a passerby on the old footpath through the estate, he was just passing through. He walked slowly and enjoyed the wind blowing pleasantly through the rich vineyard land. The vines were rich-green with the lustre of leaves and grapes.
He was meditating on his own thoughts as he walked. It was late afternoon and weather was pleasant. Breeze was cool on his face and body. His garments were old and white, but clean and recently washed. He had new sandals on his feet, which his mother had recently bought him at the market in town. He walked with them in easy steps over the well-trodden footpath. In the distance he could see some farm workers with a horse and cart working over on the far side of the valley.
His thoughts centred about his life and its purpose. Who was he as a man? The prophet had called him ‘the anointed’ and the ‘son of man’. These thoughts he pondered deeply as he walked. On the one hand it made him feel good to have some higher purpose and goal in his life, and the other hand it gave him a lot of problems to worry about. Sometimes it was as if he carried the world’s burdens on his shoulder. The next moment his thoughts would be as free as a bird. He wandered on along the path struggling with his own thoughts, struggling with his own angels and demons.
The sun was slowly traversing its path down the skyline, and it threw rich glowing, golden rays of light across the valley and vineyards. The sunbeams floated and danced in flecks of light through the grapes and the leaves of the plants. The grapes lit-up in a pinkish-red translucent glow as he passed by. On the far side of the valley the footpath led him away from the man’s estate, and he soon found the road that led to the villages further on. He kept on walking along this road and left the valley and the vineyards behind him…
End.
