Jonah.

The sky was a clear, brilliant, crystal blue above and the water was chopped gently by the caressing wind that tugged at the main-sail and which bore the boat on over the sea. The planks of the vessel heaved and swayed, and made ominous creaking noises as they sailed on. One of the hands was casting out a small net from time to time on the far side of the boat, in the hope of catching something for their supper.

“I wonder if he’ll have any luck soon,” Jonah stood and wandered as he was lost in his own thoughts. “I’m glad I didn’t respond to that bad premonition I had, and that I didn’t go to the city to warn them. God; some called it.” No he was far better of heading for the other side of the world, than heading for the busy cities where disaster seemed imminent.

The wood moved as he stood, and his body and legs swayed with the motion. The waves were calm and the boat sailed on smoothly. No problems so far, he said to himself, it looks like plain sailing. Soon I will be on the other side of the vast expanse of water, and safely away from any wrathful gods, and other major calamities.

It was nice out on the open water, and the land was only a distant reminder behind them. The sails billowed out smoothly as the small boat sailed on. Jonah kept standing to the fore of the vessel and looking out to sea and enjoying the view and surroundings. He was born and raised in small fishing village, so it was a life he was accustomed to. He smiled to himself; it was a wonderful late afternoon, with only the hint of a few scattered clouds on the horizon tainted pink and grey.

As the sun slowly began to set, he whiled away the remaining day-hours on the deck, and gave a hand where it was needed, as was his job onboard. It was a magnificent day, and the boat travelled smoothly on over the water. He would eat his supper with the rest of the crew, and then get a good nights rest. He was one of the boys, and tomorrow promised to be another pleasant day of work and sailing…

End.
