the mechanic

from the ABC set ФФФ Autumn Leaves

When my dad was a boy he taught himself the basics of mechanics by fixing and overhauling lawnmower engines (Petrol lawnmowers). When he was in his young adulthood, he did his apprenticeship as an auto mechanic at Volvo in East London. They set high standards and he was the top of his class. He worked for a while at a Radar station of the air force near Mafikeng, when I was born. He was a mechanic all his life and worked for Atlas, the Air Force and in his last years in the private sector as a foreman for Toyota. We often worked on motorcars ‘till very late at night him and me. Far past bedtime. I was passing spanners but mostly shining a torch for him to work on an engine. Already as a child. As you say he was very respected and admired as an artisan but he wasn’t known for patience. I think I’m the only guy who truly knows how to pray for a bolt to take the thread.

My uncle told of how the master tradesman had our dad dismantle and then re-assemble a Volvo engine in record time- in pitch dark. He was a legend really. A father to be proud of.
