Boredom (for Doeslittle)

from the ABC set Something for the Weekend (May 2008)

Boredom (30th May 2008, 1.07am)

Here you go, Doeslittle!

I scribble the word:
Boredom,
try and make it fit.

Nothing rhymes with it,
apart from other words
with the same suffix.

Can I capture it,
that sense of missing
out on time?
Wasting it, waiting
for that inspired last line
as the rain hammers
against the head-high window,
and my confidence shatters
in the wake of no comments
on my latest offering.

Boredom:
trying to shape words
into works of fiction,
prose from the poet’s fingers
like blood from pumice stones,
scraping against skin,
resisting the urge to rhyme,
twisting in the chains
of longer lines.

Can I contain one word
in a poem, and do it well enough
to capture the attention
of fellow late-night scribblers
who say it can’t be done?

Can never resist a challenge! Tch!

well, its late morning now, but I guess I'll take it back; it kept my interest yet you must have been bored to write it; Kudos!

Very well done. Stanza four is exceptional, 'blood from pumice stones' is a very fine image.

You might find, if you care to investigate, that you garner quite a high proportion of comments. Many writers and their pieces receive far fewer.

Ewan

Thank you, 'blood from pumice stones' is exactly how I feel when I try to write prose - it takes so much time and I have a short attention span these days now I have to work for a living!

It was written in response to a challenge - I was not bored at all, ironically!

I am very grateful for everyone who takes the time to comment on my work, I was up very late writing (a privilege during a week night, not to have to get up early next day/today!) and very few people were around to comment - apart from Doeslittle!
