Selfishness

from the ABC set Something for the Weekend (May 2008)

Selfishness (12th June 2008, 8.26am)

It’s six a.m.;
you’ve just come to bed;
my alarm is showing me
the yellow card
as you reach out an arm
pull me back into the warm;

how dare you?

The coffee pot cries;
the radio comes on;
the dog wants to be fed;
you won’t let me out of bed.

I’ll be late for work;
you don’t care at all,
selfish to the bone,
safe and comfortable;

you start to run your hands
down my aching skin;
and I think:
what’s half an hour
when spent in such
delicious sin?

I detach myself,
once making love is done;
I close my mouth;
you turn over and
fall a-slumber,
satisfied but tired;
I’m still late for work;
I want to stay here;

how dare you?

I know this so well as my wife works shift work. It is particularly hard on cold difficult on cold winter mornings.

How dare they indeed.

This again is very lyrical. I can almost hear the melody in the air.
