Demonic booming, rattling, dragging. Echoes bouncing off the scalloped plastic roof like blasts around a quarry. Like music. Ragged plastic curtain across the Portakabin for the workmen. That's music too. Tremendous the work Kerouac would have used. Tremendous booming and blasting in some great square hole in the earth. Workmen at the levers: man-machines in machine-men.
