Too late for accusation

Saw a young girl on the road-side,
should be in school I thought,
I had no money,
stopped to ask about her life.

I could see she'd had it hard
for someone in this place & time,
a few scars on her face & mind,
another who had been hurt inside.

Didn't matter she cried each day
remembers starting walking,
makes no difference, I'm afraid
can't be a victim once over the age.

What is she now, a lier? a drama queen
not even welcome in the looney bin.
Should of heard what she had to say;
what a difference a year makes, eh?

I know other parents would be shocked
the ones who were meant to protect her
I can believe her story is too familiar
happens all the time in some countries.

I give her a phone number, not mine,
an ear, a helping hand,
maybe some cash, I told her,
I didn't want to say it was a helpline.

I liked this - very good. The irregular rhyming works well; keeps it edgy. And the awkwardness of the encounter comes across nicely.

Thank-you both :) I don't expect people to like sad poems so it must be good!
