They stepped from the shadowed alley
onto the rain grayed cobbles of the square
as the sun danced through a rent
in the lowering cloud.
They walked slowly, holding each other,
not in support of their advanced years
but as if they could not bear to separate,
even for a second.
The love forged in their long life together,
was obvious in every gesture they made,
and shone from eyes too wise
to be weary of the world.
As they passed, oblivious to all but themselves
I, who had sought but failed to find such love,
too many times to remember
Felt my heart crack with longing.
