BOXES, BUNDLES, BAGS

from the ABC set THE WORLD ABOUT ME

A charity shop
But one of many
Just the place I work...

Midst boxes, bundles, bags.

Every day donations
In every shape and size
Books & knickknacks, shoes & clothes...

In boxes, bundles, bags.

‘Thank you very much’ say I
With gratitude, with smile
Yet sometimes sadness lurks behind...

These boxes, bundles, bags.

Why these shoes untraveled?
Why this dress unworn?
And why a book "To Nana"?...

Midst boxes, bundles, bags.

How came they to wash up here
What lies behind their gift?
Flotsam? Jetsam? of a life...

In boxes, bundles, bags.

Hi Kahdai,

we're lucky we don't get too many of those, we do however get a weird amount of empty cd and dvd boxes. Most peculiar.

Thanks for reading.

I liked this, I'm a big fan of charity shopping and I like wondering through the stories of all the items on the shelves and racks too. Very inspiring.

It's sad isn't it. remnants of someones life, rendered anonymous, bundled up in bin bags. I once found a whole photo album full of sepia and B&W photos of what seemed to be a whole family going back generations. I couldn't bear to throw them in the rubbish, but who would want them?.
I thought of tracing them but without a surname it was impossible.
Still, empty cd boxes must be good for something..:}

Thank you shoe and russiandoll for reading and commenting, I'm pleased you both picked up on the thoughts behind the poem.

Love the repetition, David - makes the poem flow really well. I worked in a charity shop very briefly last summer - and I asked all these same questions!

Hi Magic, thanks for reading and for the positive comment. If ever we get a very mysteious donation we try and come up with a back story - doubtless we get it completely wrong but fun anyway.
