I crave to save, to stash the cash
To keep it safe inside a safe
Lest I become a wealthless waif.
In anal ranks of piggy banks
I chain my change in small Shawshanks;
While no mean miser I've grown wiser
To the risk of commerce brisk.
Gone the spendthrift days of yore
I'll pass the door to every store,
I'll spend no more what isn't mine
And toe the line until such time
The outlook shows a wealthier clime.
Unless it's a necessity
My shopping trips cry brevity,
Without a doubt it's in and out,
To buy for need not creeping greed,
My wallet says I must succeed.
Once a wonga warrior
For now I'm just a worrier;
By burgeoning bills, by Whitehall's ills
By national debt, by all beset,
I bet my belt must tighten yet.
My "urge to splurge" now "dust to dust"
From boom to bust I must adjust.

Hi there, David;-)
I have just 'tuned in' to ABC after being seduced by a pair of 'must have' sheepskin boots on a well known internet site, and have succumbed to their charms...now I read this and I feel so very, very guilty;-)
Seriously though, a brilliantly crafted poem, much enjoyed.

Thank you so much Tina, I am always pleased when you read, comment upon and enjoy my poems.
Though I hate to say it, its often the "guilty" purchases that are the most pleasurable.

I like this too kheldar - and it's a very good inspiration point!
Tina, it's ok to buy sheepskin boots. there's no need to feel guilty. They are a necessity, like bread.

Ah, so this is what started the whole scramble of poems about yearning to save.
Very rhythmic and enjoyable, kheldar. Many good lines to choose from. I have selected the final ones to be representative of the entire poem:
"By burgeoning bills, by Whitehall's ills
By national debt, by all beset,
I bet my belt must tighten yet.
My "urge to splurge" now "dust to dust"
From boom to bust I must adjust."
Congratulations on the cherry.

Sorry I'm so late to this, David! Just been so busy with my final week at uni - but now I'm home safe and sound :) This is wonderful - the assonance makes it flow so well. Very deserving of a cherry! Merry Christmas ;)
