How can the eyes that shone with love
Now darken in contempt?
How did the voice that spoke support
Become so tact exempt?
How can the smile that flowered for me
Alas no longer bloom?
How can the closeness we enjoyed
Live each in its own room?
How can once caressing hands
Be oft in anger clenched?
How was desire's joyous thirst
So soon and sadly quenched?
How did a heart so open
Get locked away inside?
How did sweet humility
Succumb to bitter pride?
How did love free gifted get
Confused with soul-less "things"?
How came gold the only worth
In tarnished wedding rings?
How did happy tears transform
To ice upon your face?
How did our dreams of naive bliss
Lead to this nightmare place?
How can we retrace our steps
Back to that other when?
How can I hope it's not too late
To say "let's start again"?
